Mechanicsburg, Pa. - December 7, 2024 - For the first time since 2004, the Springfield College wrestling team won the Petrofes Invitational thanks to individual titles from
Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.), Jaden Colwell (Lords Valley, Pa.) and
Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.).
In a competition which featured multiple nationally-ranked teams, Springfield totaled 180 points to win the tournament, outdistancing host Messiah (176) and Alvernia (173.5).
Colwell was the top seed at 133 pounds and earned five victories on the weekend, including a pair of pins, before grinding out a 6-4 decision over Tyler Davis from Adrian in the championship.  At 285 pounds, Katz was impressive as he powered through his bracket as the number two seed, registering three pins and two technical falls, highlighted by a 23-7 triumph versus Braeden Fluke of Averett in the finals.Â
Leonard won the award for most pins in the least amount of time as he put all five of his opponents on their back at the 184 pound weight class en route to the title. Four of his pins came in the first period, including topping Eli Crum from Lycoming in just 1:23 in the title bout as he claimed first place.
At 141 pounds,
Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) earned runner-up honors as he went 4-1 with a pair of pins before shutting down second-seeded  Asa Brunk of Messiah, 3-0, in the semifinals. Â
Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) took third at 174 pounds as he notched four pins on the weekend, while
Nick Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) finished fifth at the same weight class. At 133 pounds,Â
Kevin Sevigny (Wallingford, Conn.) battled his way to a fifth-place finish as well.Â
Lucien Perla (Stow, Mass.) finished sixth at 157, as did
Luke Temple (Jackson, N.J.) at 149, whileÂ
Matt Duquette (Bristol, Conn.) added a seventh-place finish at 165 as did
Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) at 125.
On Friday, Springfield will travel to Rhode Island to take on Roger Williams at 7 pm.Â
