Records Fall for Women's Gymnastics on Sunday in Dual with Cortland

Springfield, Mass. – February 18, 2024 – The Springfield College women's gymnastics team produced a season-high score and took down three school records in this afternoon's dual meet with Cortland inside Blake Arena. Cortland edged Springfield in the team competition by a score of 190.550-189.400.

Springfield saw individual student-athletes claim wins in three of four events today including the floor, uneven bars and vault.

As a team, Springfield broke the school record in the floor exercise with a combined total score of 48.700 topping the previous best of 48.600 set by the 2019 and 2022 squads. It was sophomore Julia Reer (Cedar Grove, N.J.) who guided the Pride on the floor individually as her score of 9.900 not only was the best score of the day between both teams, but tied Tali Twomey's school record from the 2018 campaign. Sophomore Stacy Taylor (Biddeford, Maine) took third on the floor with a score of 9.755 and she was followed by classmate Sage Kaplan (Auburn, Mass.) in fifth with a mark of 9.750.

Springfield graduate student Sophia LeBlanc (Waltham, Mass.) also tied the school record with her impressive 9.800 on the uneven bars as she claimed first place this afternoon tying the previous record set by Jess Clemens in 2018 and Winter Osborne in 2022. Behind LeBlanc on the bars was junior Ayako Maeda (Yokohama, Japan) as she took fifth with a score of 9.550.

Kaplan and LaViolette swept the top two spots in the vault this afternoon as Kaplan placed first with a score of 9.675, LaViolette took second with a 9.600. Sophomore Claire Geiger (Independence, Ky.) was Springfield's third best finisher on the vault as she placed fifth with a score of 9.575.

Springfield rounded out its day by playing three in the top five on the balance beam as Reer and first-year Ava Kelley (Mashpee, Mass.) tied for second with scores of 9.625. LeBlanc finished fourth overall with a 9.550.

The Pride will return to action next Sunday with a tri-meet at SUNY Brockport that will feature the Golden Eagles, Springfield and Ursinus College in the penultimate regular season meet for Springfield.
