Box Score South Hadley, Mass. – March 23, 2024 – The Springfield College women's tennis team was clipped by Mount Holyoke College, 5-4, in their New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener on Saturday afternoon.
Springfield dipped to 0-6, 0-1 NEWMAC, while Mount Holyoke pushed to 7-2, 1-0.
Mount Holyoke jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 by scores of 8-2 and 8-3, respectively. Springfield's No. 3 duo of
Veronica Fulgieri (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and
Natalia Peyon (Hong Kong) picked up a decisive 8-3 win for the Pride heading into singles play.
At No. 1 singles,
Kapom Vettayawaikoon (Phuket, Thailand) earned a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 win for the Pride before
Alysa Elliot (Gros-Islet, Saint Lucia) pulled out a 6-2, 5-7, 10-4 win at No. 4 for Springfield. The Pride's final point of the afternoon came via
Kelly McGoldrick (Monroe, N.Y.), who played another three set match at No. 5 singles as she was victorious by a 6-2, 5-7, 12-10 final. The Lyons earned wins at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 singles to come away with the 5-4 decision.
Springfield will head to Brandeis University for a non-conference matchup on Thursday, March 28 at 3:30 pm.
