Men's Soccer Edged By Wesleyan

Box Score Middletown, Conn. – September 17, 2024 – The Springfield College men's soccer team was edged by Wesleyan University, 1-0, in a non-conference contest on Wednesday evening on Smith Field.

Wesleyan, the fifth ranked team in Region I by the United Soccer Coaches this week, remained unbeaten and improved to 4-0-1 with its second result against a NEWMAC opponent this fall, while Springfield fell to 1-4-1.

In the first half, Wesleyan held possession of the ball for the majority of the period as the Cardinals posted a 15-4 differential in shots and took three corners in the stanza. The hosts got on the board just 15 minutes into the match when Yousuf Saeed buried a penalty kick into the net for his first goal of the season.

Springfield nearly knotted the score at one late in the second half when Brandon Trent (Commack, N.Y.) headed the ball from inside the 6-yard box, but Wesleyan keeper Mathis Blanc made the save to hold the Pride without a goal. Wesleyan shutout Springfield for the seventh consecutive match between the two clubs this evening.

Overall, Wesleyan maintained a 26-10 advantage in shots and a 7-1 margin in corner kicks. Springfield keeper Noah Pote (Washington, Conn.) made a season-high five saves in the effort for the Pride tonight.

Springfield will open NEWMAC play on Saturday, September 21 with a match at Emerson College beginning at 1:00 pm
