Providence, R.I. – January 26, 2025 – The Springfield College wrestling team finished sixth at the 2025 New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) Dual Meet Championships on Sunday afternoon at Johnson & Wales University.
The duals featured No. 4 ranked Johnson & Wales, No. 6 Castleton, No. 15 Coast Guard and No. 21 Springfield (rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association – as of 1/24/25) along with 12 other programs from the region. Johnson & Wales rolled to the team title for the eighth consecutive season.
Springfield picked up wins against Norwich (38-6) and WPI (28-17) en route to the fifth place match.
Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.) went an undefeated 4-0 on the day at 285 with four pins, while
Myles Leonard (Waldwick, N.J.) went 3-0 with two pins to lead the charge for Springfield. In total, Springfield produced nine pins, a major decision, a technical fall and eight wins via decision.
Springfield rolled past Norwich in its first dual of the day, 38-6, as the Pride raced out to a 14-0 lead through three matches and never looked back.
Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) earned a 13-7 decision at 125 before
Jaden Colwell (Lords Valley, Pa.) used a technical fall to ease past Robert Lyons, 17-2, at 133 and
Ryan Kozdra (Mahwah, N.J.) picked up Springfield's first pin of the day in just 1:25 at 141. Norwich got points back at 149 and 157, but that's all the Cadets would respond with as Springfield won the final five bouts of the day highlighted by a 42-second pin at 165 by
Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) and a second period pin at 285 by
Ben Katz (Medford, N.Y.).
In the quarterfinal round, Springfield matched up with Williams, but the Ephs held the Pride to just three points through the first six bouts which came as an 8-7 decision win by Colwell at 133. Christopher Colon pinned Callahan at 125 and then extended the lead to 25-3 before
Nick Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) earned a 6-2 decision at 174 over Henry Forte. Williams used a forfeit and a pin to account for its 37 points, but Katz stepped in at 285 and registered his second pin in as many duals over Thomas Goodwin to give Springfield its 12 points.
In the consolation bracket, Springfield earned a 28-17 win over WPI thanks to the bottom half of the lineup. The Engineers held a 11-7 edge through the first five bouts, but Deguire gave Springfield the lead right back and for good with a first period pin at 165 over Ryan Hsu in just 1:27. Rogers went on to earn a 14-7 decision at 174, Leonard pinned Ethan Edmondson in just 22-seconds at 184 and Katz picked up his third pin of the afternoon late in the second period at 285 to account for the 28-17 final.
In the final match of the day against Wesleyan, Callahan gave Springfield an early 3-0 edge at 125, but the Cardinals used a pin and three straight major decisions for an 18-3 advantage. Deguire gave Springfield a trio of points with a decision at 165 before pins by Leonard and Katz at 184 and 285, respectively, accounted for the 28-15 final.
Springfield will rematch with Wesleyan in Connecticut next Saturday, February 1 at 12pm in a dual meet.
