Springfield, Mass. – April 13, 2025 – The Springfield College men's tennis team secured a 4-3 win over Clark University in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Sunday afternoon on the Appleton Tennis Courts.
Springfield, which improved to 12-2 overall and to 4-1 in NEWMAC play, reached the 12 win mark in a season just the sixth time since 1949 and the first time since 2017. Springfield sits just one victory shy of tying the program record for wins (13) which came in 1989 and 1992. Clark, meanwhile, fell to 5-10, 2-3.
Springfield won two of the three doubles matches including a thrilling 7-6 (7-3) win from
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and
Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) at No. 3.
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) and
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) also picked up a 6-3 victory at No. 2.
Singles play was tight all the way through to see who would pick up the crucial conference win for seeding purposes in next week's NEWMAC Tournament.
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) gave Springfield a 2-0 edge after winning by retirement at No. 5 before
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.) earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6.
Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico) then secured the match for the Pride with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Graham Russo at No. 3.
Clark's three singles wins all came in three sets. Edward Shepherd-Johnson beat out Kimoto at No. 1, 6-4, 5-7, 10-4, Ziad Tabbara edged out Guzman at No. 2, 3-6, 6-2, 10-6 and Ryan Hovey beat Huppke at No. 4, 5-7, 6-4, 10-3.
