New London, Conn. – April 18, 2025 – The Springfield College men's tennis team tied the program record for wins as the Pride topped the Coast Guard Academy, 7-0, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Thursday afternoon on the road.
Springfield which now has the most wins since the 1989 and 1992 squads produced 13 victories, improved to 13-2 overall and to 5-1 in NEWMAC play. The Pride will either be the number two or number three seed in the conference tournament pending the result from Saturday's match against Babson.
Springfield won the doubles point after victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 slots as
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) and
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) won 6-3, while
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) and
Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) won 6-2.
Springfield then went on to secure the 7-0 victory with wins in all six singles contests. Kimoto and Guzman played three set thrillers at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively as Kimoto defeated Ben Bonetto, 2-6, 6-1, 10-8, while Guzman topped Brendan Love, 6-2, 0-6, 6-1. The remaining four points all came as wins in straight sets.
Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico), who clinched the match for Springfield won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3,
Phakin Thongbooncharoen (Bangkok, Thailand) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4,
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) won 6-0, 7-6 at No. 5 and
Marten Schalin (Taby, Sweden) won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
Springfield will host nationally-ranked Babson College on Saturday for Senior Day on the Appleton Tennis Courts at 11:00 am.
