Cambridge, Mass. – April 2, 2025 – In a hard fought New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) battle on the road, the Springfield College men's tennis team fell to 47th ranked MIT, 6-1, on Wednesday afternoon.
MIT improved to 5-4 overall and to 3-0 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield was handed just its second loss of the season and now sits at 9-2, 1-1.
The homestanding Engineers eased their way through No. 1 and No. 2 doubles with 6-0 and 6-3 wins, respectively, but Springfield gave MIT all it could handle at No. 3 as
Liam Huppke (Markham, Cananda) and
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) ultimately fell by a 7-6 (7-3) final.
MIT won five of the six singles points with
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.) at No. 6 being the lone winner for Springfield. Taub defeated Cole Armstrong, 7-5, 1-6, 10-4 for Springfield's point in the contest. The Engineers were victorious in straight sets in the remaining matches with the only other close decision coming at No. 5 from
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) as he fell 7-5, 6-2 to Nicholas Liu.
Springfield will continue NEWMAC play on Friday at Wheaton College with a 3:30 pm start time.
