Cambridge, Mass. – April 25, 2025 – The Springfield College men's tennis team ended its historic 2024-25 season with a 4-0 setback to second-seeded MIT in the semifinal round of the 2025 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament on Friday afternoon.
Springfield sees its season end with a record of 13-4 tying the program record for wins, while MIT advances to the NEWMAC title match on Sunday against top-seeded Babson College.
Kailas Kahler and Grant Gallagher began the match with a 6-3 win over
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) and
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) at No. 2 doubles before Adam Sun and Joseph Li edged
Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall Bridge, Conn.) and
Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico) 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. The third doubles match was not completed, but MIT had a 5-3 lead in the match.
MIT took the doubles point into singles play and advanced to the semifinal round with a trio of wins in straight sets. Kahler topped Kimoto, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1, Sun defeated Villanueva Abad, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 and Siddharth Marathe defeated
Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada), 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4. The remaining three singles matches were not completed as the contest was played to decision.
