Providence, RI – January 24, 2026 – Highlighted by four student-athletes placing in the top six in their respective weight classes including a first place finish by
Jacob Deguire (Schenectady, N.Y.) at 174, the Springfield College wrestling program took part in the Wildcat Open this afternoon at Johnson & Wales.
Deguire rolled through the bracket at 174 pinning his first two opponents in less than 25 seconds. He then pinned Thomas Rhodes of Coast Guard in 3:16 to earn a spot in the semifinal round. Deguire earned his spot in the championship with a 4-2 semifinal decision and then used a first period pin to win the title.
Nick Rogers (Watertown, N.Y.) had a strong showing at 197 fighting his way through the bracket into the championship final. Rogers started his day with a 17-0 technical fall over Abe Al-Khalili of Coast Guard before pinning Connor Cuba of Merchant Marine in under a minute. He faced
Oliver Parker (Pawtucket, RI) in the quarterfinals and earned a 12-3 major decision before taking down Kevin Pandorf of Coast Guard in sudden victory. Rogers was ultimately defeated in the finals by Josh Negron of Castleton, the second-ranked wrestler in the region. These two are likely to face each other again come the NCAA regional championship meet.
Jack Callahan (Tewksbury, Mass.) returned the lineup and finished fifth at 125. After falling in his first matchup, 5-3, Callahan used back-to-back pins and an 11-3 major decision to reach the semifinal of the consolation bracket. He then took down Avi Berg of Castleton by major decision, 14-0, and then pinned Robbie Lyons in under a minute to take fifth. Callahan won five straight bouts to earn his placement this afternoon after dropping his initial bout.
Gabriel Thomasson (Norton, Mass.) won his first bout by technical fall, 17-2, but dropped into the consolation bracket after a 9-3 loss in the round of 16. Thomasson bounced back with a 25-10 technical fall, a 12-4 major decision, a 19-3 technical fall and a 4-1 sudden victory decision to reach the fifth place match.
Tomorrow's NEWA Duals have been canceled due to the snow storm, but Springfield will return home for a senior night dual under the lights with Trinity College on Friday at 7:00 pm.
