Springfield, Mass. – July 21, 2026 – Springfield College announced that
Max Berkowitz has stepped down as Director of Strategic Athletic Communications after three years of leadership in one of the most successful and visible periods in the department's recent history.
Since joining Springfield College in 2023, Berkowitz served as the primary media relations contact for all 26 varsity athletic programs while elevating the department's storytelling, digital presence and championship event operations.
"Max contributed much to the overall student-athlete experience at Springfield College during his three plus years on Alden Street. From our strong social media presence, to human interest stories showcasing some of our nearly 700 student-athletes, to the nuts and bolts of statistics and contest streaming, and the hosting of a National Championship, Max demonstrated a commitment to excellence. I thank him for his service," said Director of Athletics, Dr.
Craig Poisson. "I wish Max the best in his next chapter."
During his tenure, Springfield Athletics experienced unprecedented growth across its digital platforms. The department's Instagram account generated more than 300,000 likes and reached over two million accounts during the 2025-26 academic year, reflecting a renewed emphasis on creative content and student-athlete storytelling. In fact, Springfield now has the fifth most combined social media followers in all of Division III. Berkowitz also launched new feature series highlighting the accomplishments of current student-athletes and alumni, helping showcase the impact of a Springfield education beyond competition.
"I want to thank Dr. Poisson and the entire Springfield College Department of Athletics for their support and partnership over the past three years. It has been a privilege to be part of such a dedicated community that is deeply committed to the success and development of its student-athletes. I am incredibly grateful for the relationships I've built, the experiences we've shared, and the opportunity to contribute to the College. I wish Springfield College and the entire athletics department continued success in the years ahead."
Berkowitz played an integral role in enhancing the department's communications infrastructure, leading the transition to a redesigned athletics website in partnership with SIDEARM Sports. He also worked closely with FloSports and the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) to elevate broadcasts for more than 100 annual athletic events.
A respected leader in Division III athletics, Berkowitz coordinated all media relations efforts for the 2026 NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball National Championship hosted by Springfield College and served as tournament director for numerous NCAA and NEWMAC championship events. He also represented the institution as a member of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Regional Advisory Committee and contributed to Springfield's Hall of Fame Committee and Student-Athlete Leadership Team.
Under Berkowitz's leadership, Springfield Athletics earned consecutive NEWMAC FloCollege Awards recognizing excellence in streaming initiatives during the 2024-25 and 2025-26 academic years. He also worked extensively to promote Springfield student-athletes through conference, regional and national award nominations.
A veteran in the Athletic Communications field with over ten years of experience, Berkowitz previously served as the Sports Information Director at Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham and as the Assistant Director of Athletic Communications, Promotions & Marketing at MIT.
Springfield College thanks Berkowitz for his dedication, professionalism and commitment to telling the stories of Pride student-athletes and wishes him continued success in his future endeavors.
