Springfield, Mass. – October 4, 2008 – The Springfield College field hockey team netted a goal in the first four minutes of play and never looked back as it overpowered MIT en route to a 3-1 victory in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday morning.
With the win, the 17th-ranked Pride improve to 6-3, 2-0 in league play while the Engineers drop to 5-7, 0-2.
The Pride jumped on the board first as Alexa Carlson collected the ball during a scramble in front of the cage and poked it past MIT goalie Keri Dixon just 3:40 into the contest.
Morgan Rein gave the Pride a 2-0 advantage off a penalty corner with 9:53 left in the first half. Rein ripped a shot from seven yards out into the back of the cage after she received a pass from teammate Meg Bradley. Springfield ended the half with a 2-0 lead after controlling much of the play in the opening stanza.
MIT cut the Pride’s lead to one with just over 10 minutes remaining in regulation as Ekavali Mishra finished a pass from Anna Teruya on a penalty corner.
However, Springfield, which applied constant pressure throughout the contest, put the game away two minutes later as Jane Kelleher netted her team-leading seventh goal of the year.
Alison McCarthy recorded the win in goal, making just one save on four shots faced.
The Pride outshot the MIT, 29-4, in the game as Dixon made five stops in the cage for the visitors.
The Pride will get on a bus and travel west to face SUNY Cortland tomorrow at 1:00 pm in a non-conference contest.
