Willimantic, Conn. – April 1, 2009 The Springfield College softball team was swept in its second-straight doubleheader as it fell in a pair of games at Eastern Connecticut State on Wednesday afternoon. The Pride dropped the opener, 7-2, before falling in the second game, 5-3.
With the two losses, SC is now 7-13 on the year and has lost its last five games.
In the opener, Springfield gave up three-straight two-run innings to ECSU as it fell 7-2. Samantha Rhodes took the loss as she tossed 3 2/3 innings, giving up five earned runs off eight hits while striking out eight batters. Aimee Cassella went 2-3 in the loss and drove in both of Springfield’s runs as she had a pair of doubles in the contest.
Springfield struggled to put runners across the plate in the second game as it stranded 14 runners in the game and outhit the home squad, 8-7. The Pride dug itself into an early hole as Megan Fitzgerald lasted just 2/3′s of an ining, giving up four earned runs on three hits. Rhodes shut down the Warriors the rest of the way, allowing just one run in the final 5 1/3 innings. Cassella once again picked up an RBI in the loss, while Angela Atkins went 2-4 with a run scored.
