Springfield, Mass. — September 17, 2026 — Springfield College Executive Director of Athletics, Dr. Craig Poisson, is pleased to announce that Eric Widger has been named as the full-time assistant coach for the Springfield College softball program.
"Eric has a strong foundation in many facets of NCAA Division III softball," said Poisson. "I look forward to him joining Coach Garcia's staff and his impact on the overall experience of our softball student-athletes."
Widger joins the Springfield College community following four seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Washington College in Maryland. In his first season with the Shorewomen, the team went 11-4-1 in Centennial Conference play and made the conference tournament for the first time since the 2018 season while two student-athletes earned National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-Region honors.
During the 2024 season, Washington College earned the top seed in the conference tournament for the first time in eight season as Widger was part of the staff that earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors from the Centennial Conference. Throughout his four seasons with the Shorewomen, he coached 19 All-Conference selections, a two-time conference Pitcher of the Year and four conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year honorees.
"I'm grateful for the opportunity to be part of the Springfield College softball program, and I'm excited about what we can achieve together!" said Widger.
Outside of the college softball space, Widger has coached softball with the Delaware Cobras travel softball organization which has now merged with the Delaware Fury. He assisted with multiple of the high school aged teams within the organization, working primarily on the development of infielders and hitters, and also spent some time helping with the day-to-day operations of the organization.
Widger attended the University of Delaware where he spent just over two years as a student manager for the NCAA Division I Delaware softball program before earning his bachelor's degree in sport management. During his time there, the Blue Hens made it to their first ever CAA Championship Final.
"We are so happy to have Eric join our coaching staff," said head coach Sam Garcia G'25. "His dedication to player development and culture building made him a great fit not only to our softball program but also to the Springfield College community."
