Men's Lacrosse Dominates Babson, 22-6

Springfield, Mass. – April 18, 2009 – The Springfield College menÂ's lacrosse team scored the first 12 goals of the game as it dominated Babson, 22-6, at Stagg Field in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action on Saturday afternoon. Jake Beebe led the Pride attack with eight points on four goals and four assists.

Springfield now stands at a perfect 5-0 in league play and owns an overall mark of 7-5 this season. The loss drops the Beavers to 4-9, 3-2 in conference action.

The Pride jumped all over the visitors as it poured in 10 goals in the first 15 minutes of play. Springfield’s first five goals all came from different players as Pat Cavanaugh, Ryan Thibodeau, Beebe, Mike Delia, and Kyle Louer all found the back of the cage to start SC’s offensive attack. The Pride poured in five more goals in the frame, including a man-down strike from Beebe after Tyler O’Keefe found the senior in transition.

Springfield scored its first goal of the second quarter just six seconds into the stanza as Beebe connected with Kyle Gable on the crease. An unassisted strike from Joe Macchi one minute later made it a 12-0 game as the Pride had complete control. The Beavers finally got on the board as E.J. Peterson scored with 4:08 left in the first half. Springfield closed out the half with four goals as it went into halftime up 16-1.

The hosts scored the first three goals of the second half, including a pair of man-up goals from Gable and Jake Jones. Jones’ goal gave Springfield its largest lead of the game, 19-1, with 3:46 left in the third.

In the final period, the visitors got a pair of goals from Matt Harrington, Armand Wilson, and Paul Grip who each tallied strikes as the Pride went on to take the contest, 22-6.

For the game, Springfield held a 60-26 advantage in shots and was especially dominant on face-offs, winning 20-of-31 in the game. 14 different players recorded at least one point in the game for Springfield, with Beebe leading the charge with eight points. Cavanaugh added a goal and three assists, Gable posted a pair of goals and assists, while Jarrid Johnson and Louer each netted hat tricks.

Chris Jez went 11-for-14 from the “X” and picked up a game-high seven ground balls. Tom Albano played the first half between the pipes and let in just one goal while making eight saves. The trio of Matt Cipolla, Cory Ender, and Marc Martinez finished the game in net for SC.

Babson’s Max Owen lasted just 9:33 in goal as he made one save and allowed seven goals before getting pulled. Mike Saucier came in and finished with 17 saves while letting in 15 goals in the final 50-plus minutes. Harrington led the way with two goals to go along with six ground balls.

The Pride return to the field on Wednesday for its first of three games next week as it travels north for a conference clash with Norwich.
