Springfield, Mass. – April 24, 2009 – Despite a 13-save performance from goalie Tom Albano, the Springfield College men’s lacrosse team fell to 12th-ranked Western New England College, 13-6, in a non-conference battle of city rivals before an enthusiastic crowd of 1550 fans Friday afternoon.
Tim Santye had a six-point performance with four goals and two assists, while Brody Savoie added two goals and three assists for the 12th-ranked Golden Bears are now 12-2 following their sixth consecutive victory.
WNEC took a 2-0 lead in the opening quarter on goals by sophomore Colin Houlihan and freshman Nick Jez.
Junior Kyle Gable put Springfield on the board at the 1:07 mark and the Pride took a 3-2 lead on two straight goals by senior Ryan Thibodeau with 9:59 left in the second stanza.
Western New England College dominated the game after that scoring nine consecutive times, including five straight goals to end the half including three strikes by Santye.
Jez finished with two goals and an assist while senior Scott Kukis also netted a pair of goals.
Shawn Runyon contributed a goal and assist for the visitors.
Freshman goalie Brewster Knowlton compiled 10 saves for the Golden Bears while Albano stopped 13 shots for the Pride as he was peppered with shots throughout the contest.
Western New England College had a 44-35 advantage in shots, including a 27-13 edge in the opening half.
The Western New England College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will present proceeds from tickets sold at todayÂ's game to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Springfield wraps up its regular season on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Pilgrim League-foe, MIT, at 3:00 pm.
