Springfield, Mass. — September 30, 2009 — Sam Williams scored on a penalty stroke just 2:11 into the first overtime and Morgan Rein added two assists to lead their Springfield College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Williams College in a non-conference contest this evening at Amos Alonzo Stagg Field. With the win, Springfield is now 5-4 overall, while Williams levels its record to 3-3.

Neither team scored for quite awhile in the first half. But with 11:19 left in the half, SC junior midfielder Meg Bradley (Cumberland, R.I.) tallied the game’s first goal. Rein, a senior midfielder from Mystic, Conn., added the assist. Williams then responded very quickly. With 10:02 left in the half, junior midfielder Alice Bearn (Bethlehem, Pa.) countered with the assist going to sophomore forward Margie Fulton (Wellesley, Mass.), and it was 1-1 at the half.

Springfield took a 2-1 lead just 2:35 into the second half when sophomore forward Alexa Carlson (New Milford, Conn.) scored. Her goal was again assisted by Rein. But at 48:10 into the match, sophomore midfielder Lucy Rollins (Rye, N.Y.) tied matters at 2-all. That goal was unassisted.

Williams had two scoring opportunities on penalty corners with no time left in regulation, but the Pride managed to hold off the Ephs.

It did not take long for the Pride to take advantage of a penalty stroke situation in the first overtime. “When it was evident we had a penalty stroke, we knew it was going to be Sam Williams taking the shot,” said Springfield Head Coach Melissa Rogers. “There are several on this team that could step up, but we have confidence in Sam right now. And she came through.”

Williams outshot Springfield, 16-10. For Williams College, sophomore Katrina Tulla (New Canaan, Conn.) was credited with 10 saves in the nets. For Springfield, sophomore Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) had 13 saves.

On Saturday (Oct. 3), Springfield will travel to MIT for a NEWMAC contest at 1 pm.
