Springfield, Mass. — September 6, 2009 — Meg Bradley fired home what proved to be the winning goal with 20:33 remaining as the Springfield College field hockey team defeated Worcester State, 3-1, in the championship game of its own Dottie Zenaty Invitational today at SC’s Amos Alonzo Stagg Field.
In the consolation game played earlier, SUNY Brockport defeated Western New England College, 2-1.
With the win in game #2, #19-ranked Springfield is now 2-0 on the young season, while Worcester State becomes 1-1.
The Pride began the scoring when senior midfielder Becca Gamble (Granby, Conn.) tallied with 21:44 remaining in the first half. The goal was assisted by senior midfielder and Tourney MVP Morgan Rein (Mystic, Conn.). That gave SC a 1-0 lead at the half. Rein finished with one goal and four assists in the tourney.
Bradley, a junior midfielder from Cumberland, R.I., then fired a rocket into the net with 20:33 left in the contest. Proving to be the game-winner, that goal was assisted by junior forward Meagan Dobson (Longmeadow, Mass.).
Worcester State then made a game of it when sophomore defender Molly Cotter (No. Easton, Mass.) countered with 13:14 remaining. That goal was assisted by senior midfielder Leslie Hill (Raynham, Mass.).
But just over six minutes later (7:02 left), SC sophomore forward Kate Newman (Uxbridge, Mass.) gave the Pride some breathing room with her first goal of the season. Bradley assisted. That closed the scoring.
Springfield had the best of it according to the statistics. SC outshot the Golden Bears, 34-6. The Pride had 20 penalty corners to WSC’s seven. WSC sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Masterjohn (Warren, Mass.) was credited with 13 saves. For SC, sophomore GK Alison McCarthy (North Andover, Mass.) made two saves.
Springfield’s second representative on the All-Tourney Team included freshman midfielder Kayla Sokol (West Brookfield, Mass.).
Up next, SC travels to play at Keene State Tuesday (Sept. 8) at 6 pm.
Consolation Game — Brockport 2, WNEC 1
In the first game of the day, the Golden Eagles defeated the Golden Bears, 2-1, in the consolation game. It was 0-0 at the half, but then senior forward Allyson Granish (Binghamton, N.Y.) struck quickly (33:43 left) to start the second stanza for Brockport. That goal was assisted by Brockport’s All-Tourney representative, junior defender Kelly-Ann Henry (Glen Head, N.Y.)
Later, with 16:24 left, freshman midfielder Jackie Massoni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) gave Brockport a 2-0 advantage. That goal came off a penalty corner.
With 10:20 left, freshman forward Katie Clegg (Athol, Mass.) counted an unassisted goal for the Golden Bears, but that finished the scoring.
Brockport had the better of the stats with a 31-12 edge in shots, and a 9-1 advantage in penalty corners. Brockport freshman Kasey Schreiner (Hamburg, N.Y.) was credited with five saves in goal, while WNEC sophomore GK Lindsey Orszulak (Longmeadow, Mass.) had 13 saves.
For WNEC, junior defender Erin Griffin (Lowell, Mass.) made the All-Tourney Team.
Brockport is now 1-1, while WNEC falls to 0-2.
