Softball Splits in Florida Versus Two Schools from Wisconsin

Kissimmee, Fla. – March 18, 2010 – The Springfield College softball team snapped its five-game skid on Thursday afternoon after downing Wisconsin-River Falls, 7-3, in the first of two games at the Rebel Games. Amanda Novak had a home run and three RBI in the victory. But the Pride then fell to St. Norbert of Wisconsin, 3-2, in the nightcap.

In the first game, freshman righthander Stef Grande (Manchester, Conn.) pitched a complete-game victory, striking out two and walking two. Novak hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second inning, giving SC a 1-0 lead. It was the first home run of the year for the Pride. Novak, a junior first baseman from Cos Cob, Conn., also had a two-RBI double in the bottom of the fifth.

In the bottom of the third, SC took a 3-0 lead when senior OF Bryn Worrilow (North Babylon, N.Y.) lined a two-run single. In the top of the fourth, senior All-American catcher Michelle Wlosek (Nutley, N.J.) showed off her defensive prowess by picking off a River Falls runner from third with two outs and the bases loaded.

In that game, freshman shortstop Kelly Blake (Watertown, Conn.) went 3-for-4, while Novak and Worrilow both went 2-for-3. Springfield had 11 hits all told.

In the second game, St. Norbert of De Pere, Wisconsin, scored two runs in the bottom of the first, and added one in the bottom of the third. Springfield scored single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, but, despite adding 11 hits in this contest, could not push across any more runs.

Junior righthander Katie Anderson (Andover, Mass.) went the distance, giving up eight hits, striking out two and walking two for the Pride.

Worrilow went 3-for-4, while sophomore infielder Tess Gagliano (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) went 2-for-3, and Wlosek went 2-for-4. Worrilow and senior OF Caitlin Corry (Seekonk, Mass.) had SC’s RBI’s in this contest.

On Friday, SC will end its trip to Florida with two more games, versus William Paterson (N.J.) at 3 pm and Transylvania (Ky.) at 5 pm.
