Babson Park, Mass. – April 11, 2010 – Springfield College scored 17 runs on 31 hits to power its way to a sweep of host Babson College in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) softball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Pride took game one, 11-1, in five innings and then claimed game two, 6-1.

  Springfield took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one, as first-year Kelly Blake laced a two-out double to center and scored on a single by senior captain Michelle Wlosek. The Pride then made it 3-0 with two more two-out runs in the third, as junior Amanda Novak and sophomore Liz Milly recorded back-to-back RBI singles to score Blake and senior captain Bryn Worrilow.

  Babson got one run back in the bottom of the fourth, beginning when sophomore Kayla Davis led off with a single up the middle and moved to third on a base hit to right by sophomore captain Nicole Latini. Junior captain Jess Winer then hit a seeing-eye single through the right side to score Davis with Babson’s first run, but Springfield first-year starter Stef Grande pitched her way out of trouble to preserve the Pride’s lead at 3-1.

  Springfield put the game away with eight runs in the top of the fifth, beginning when Worrilow led off with her first home run of the season. Novak and Milly later added back-to-back doubles to make it 5-1, a sacrifice fly to left by sophomore Tess Gagliano plated another run, and consecutive RBI singles by first-year Chelsea Bender and Blake gave the visitors an 8-1 cushion. Wlosek then blasted her second homer of the spring with a runner aboard make it 10-1, and Novak’s second RBI hit of the frame gave Springfield an 11-1 advantage.   Grande earned the win in the opener, allowing one run on nine hits and a walk to improve her season record to 6-8. Novak went 4-for-4 with a run and two RBIs to pace the Pride offense, while Black and Worrilow each added three hits and three runs scored.

  First-year Catie Funk continued her torrid hitting of late with a 3-for-3 performance for Babson. It marked the rookie’s fifth straight three-hit game – a streak that saw her go an incredible 15-for-17. Winer added two hits and an RBI in two trips for the Beavers, while first-year Megan Brain took the loss on the mound to fall to 8-3 on the season.

  A two-out error enabled Springfield to get on the board in the first inning of game two. After Blake reached on a miscue with two outs, Wlosek singled her to third. Worrilow then ripped a single to center, scoring Blake with the first run of the contest.

The Pride made it 3-0 with another longball in the third inning, as Blake doubled to center and Wlosek followed with her second home run of the day over the wall in center. It was the All-American’s third of the season and 27th of her career, breaking Springfield’s all-time record previously held by Missy Edwards ’05. The visitors later added single runs in the fourth and fifth to increase their lead to 5-0.

  Babson finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth, as first-year Lynn Brewster, first-year Jackie Enos, and Funk all singled to load the bases with one out. Brewster then scored on an RBI fielder’s choice to short by Davis to cut the Beavers’ deficit to 5-1.

  Springfield re-established its five-run lead in the top of the sixth, as Worrilow singled in Bender from second to push the Pride’s advantage to 6-1.

  Sophomore Megan Fitzgerald went the distance for Springfield in the nightcap, allowing one run on seven hits, walking one and striking out two in seven innings. The win improved her record to 6-3 on the season. Blake and Worrikow both had three more hits in game two to pace the visitors’ offense, while Worrilow joined Wlosek with two RBI.

  Enos went 2-for-3 to pace the Babson offense, while senior starter Danielle Liska (Seymour, Conn.) fell to 8-5 with the loss after allowing four earned runs and striking out five in seven innings.
