Softball Explodes For 15 Runs In Nightcap To Salvage Split At Williams

Williamstown, Mass. – April 12, 2010 – After dropping the opening game of its doubleheader at Williams College, 4-1, the Springfield College softball team plated 15 runs in just five innings to win the nightcap, 15-7. Michelle Wlosek continued to swing the bat well as she totaled five hits and five RBI in the two games.

The split lifts Springfield’s record to above .500 as it now stands at 15-14 this season. Williams drops to 7-14 in 2010.

The opener saw the Ephs score three runs in the second and one in the third to take a commanding 4-0 lead. Williams used a three-run shot by Carly Ameen in the second to gain an early lead.

Springfield could only muster one run, which came in the top of the seventh off an Amanda Novak RBI double to center.

Novak went a perfect 3-for-3 in the opener, while Wlosek added a pair of hits.

Katie Anderson lasted three innings, giving up all four earned runs as she shouldered the loss. Megan Fitzgerald came in to shut the Ephs out in the final three frames, allowing just one hit.

In the second game, both teams provided plenty of offense in the first inning as each scored four runs. However, Springfield would sustain its offense over the next four innings as it scored three in the second, one in the third and fourth, before blowing the game open with six runs in the fifth.

Wlosek gave Springfield the lead for good in the second as she blasted her third home run in as many days to give SC a 7-4 advantage.

Bryn Worrilow registered four hits in the second game and scored three runs, while Novak and Kelly Blake each had two RBI. In the second game, Springfield pounded out 19 hits.

On the mound, Fitzgerald didn’t get out of the first inning as she surrendered four earned runs off five hits. Stef Grande came into the contest and earned the win as she tossed the final 4.1 innings, give up two earned runs and striking out four while scattering five hits.

The Pride are back in action on Wednesday afternoon for another non-conference doubleheader against MCLA. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
