Worcester, Mass. – April 21, 2010 – The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team opened up a 7-2 lead after the first quarter of play and never looked back as it toppled Clark, 15-5, on Wednesday evening in Pilgrim Lacrosse League action.
The Pride has now won six consecutive games to improve to 8-4, including a perfect 5-0 mark in conference action. The Cougars drop to 6-5, 2-2 in league play.
Springfield poured in seven goals in the first 15 minutes of play as six different players found the back of the cage. Joe Heney set the tone for the game as he took a Mike Delia feed and slotted home a goal just 11 seconds into the game. The Cougars would not back down though as Shawn Roche fired home an unassisted goal at the 11:54 mark to even the game at one.
From there it was all Springfield as SC scored five unanswered goals over the next 7:01 to take a commanding 6-1 advantage. Just 59 seconds later, Roche connected on a man-up goal to make it 6-2, only to have the visitors go on a six-goal spurt en route to a 12-2 lead with 8:32 left in the third.
Clark made it an eight-goal game at 13-5 after Phil Winslow scored a man-up goal with 12:07 remaining in regulation. However, goals from Joe Macchi and Eric Balslov closed out the game as Springfield won by a 10-goal margin.
Springfield finished the game with a 51-26 advantage in shots.
Austin Orsini led all scorers with three goals and two assists, while Heney pumped home four goals in the win. Kyle Louer and Mike Delia each recorded two goals and an assist for Springfield. Mark Eaton won 10-of-18 at the face-off “X” and snagged a game-high 11 ground balls.
Chris Johnson registered two goals and two assists in the loss, while Roche tacked on a pair of goals and 10 ground balls. Andrew DeVito posted 15 saves in goal while suffering the loss for the Cougars.
Marc Martinez was one of three Springfield goalies to play in the contest and earned the victory as he played just over 35 minutes, allowing two goals and making five saves.
Springfield will now prepare for its final non-conference game of the season as it squares off against cross-town rival Western New England on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
