Men's Lacrosse Remains Unbeaten In League Play With 11-3 Win At Mass. Maritime

Buzzards Bay, Mass. – April 24, 2010 – The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team opened up a 10-1 lead midway through the third quarter as it cruised past Mass. Maritime, 11-3, in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League contest on Saturday afternoon. Harry Bernstein scored three goals and added two assists in the win.

The game, which was Springfield’s third this week, comes after the Pride played less than 24 hours ago when it fell to local-rival Western New England College. The win boosts Springfield’s record to 9-5, including a 6-0 mark in league play.

The visiting Pride extended its conference winning streak to 22 straight datingback to April 2007. Springfield struck for three goals in the final 2:29 of the opening quarter in building a 5-1 advantage at the break. Bernstein completed his hat trick with a pair of tallies that came as part of five unanswered third quarter markers that enabled the visitors to pull away. The Pride had six different goal scorers for the afternoon.

Senior Joe Macchi added a pair of goals and an assist for three points in the win for Springfield, which also received two goals each off the sticks of senior Kyle Gable and junior Kyle Louer. Sophomore Mike Delia added a goal and three assists in the triumph for the Pride, who also received a tally from sophomore Jarrid Johnson and a single helper off the stick of junior Austin Orsini.

Springfield dominated the face-off “X” as Mark Eaton went 10-for-13 with seven ground balls, while Evan Buss was a perfect 5-for-5.

Junior Chris Davis netted a pair of goals in the setback for the host Buccaneers (2-11, 0-5 Pilgrim), which also received a tally off the stick of freshman Parker Simon as well as assists from junior Michael Lambros, sophomore Kyle Scannell and freshman Dan Langley.

Sophomore Marc Martinez picked up the win in goal for Springfield with a three-save effort over the first half of action. Senior Matt Cipolla and Matt Lecuyer combined for five stops over the final 30 minutes of play for the visitors. Senior James Hitchings made a season-high 21 stops in net in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime, as the Pride outshot the Buccaneers by a 43-14 margin for the contest.

Massachusetts Maritime hosts Wheaton in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League outing on Wednesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Springfield will be idle until next Saturday afternoon when the Pride travel to Babson Park, Mass. to take on Babson in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League match that begins at 5:00 p.m.
