Late Goal Gives Brandeis 1-0 Win Over Men's Soccer

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – October 19, 2011 – The Springfield College men’s soccer team surrendered a goal in the 84th minute as it lost a hard-fought 1-0 non-conference contest with Brandeis on a rainy Wednesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.

The win boosts the Judges record to 9-4-1, while the Pride lost its second-straight contest to drop to 8-3-3.

For the contest, Brandeis held a 13-5 advantage in shots, including a 7-2 edge in the decisive second half. The Judges also took 11 corner kicks to the Pride’s three.

Despite being outshot 6-3 in the opening 45 minutes of play, Springfield put forth the gameÂ's most promising chance in the first half.

Springfield appeared to take the lead 2:18 into the game, but it had the goal called back due to offsides. Ryan Malone and Drew Vanasse factored in on the bid as MaloneÂ's free kick from beyond midfield was flicked home by Vanasse inside the six yard box after he rose up above a crowd of defenders. However, both the linesman and head referee met and decided to call the goal back.

Tyler Savonen produced the visitors top scoring chance of the opening half at the 37:46 mark. Savonen ripped a full-volley attempt from 18 yards following a failed Springfield clear that was snuffed out by Springfield keeper Brett Bascom.

BrandeisÂ' constant second half pressure paid off with the gameÂ's first goal in the 84th minute. Sam Ocel carried the ball down the right flank to the endline before sending a skipping cross through the six yard box. Lee Russo was wide open on the back post and knocked home his shot into the back of the net.

Bascom totaled two saves in the loss, while Blakek Minchoff didn’t need to make a stop to earn the shutout win.

Up next for Springfield is their final New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match of the year, at WPI on Saturday beginning at 1:30 pm.
