Springfield, Mass. – April 11, 2011 – The Springfield College softball team split with visiting Williams College in non-conference action at Potter Field on Monday. The Ephs rallied for a 12-10 win in the opener before Springfield cruised to a 7-1 win in five innings in the nightcap as the game was called due to darkness.

With the split, Springfield is now 19-12, while Williams is 9-9.

Game #1 — Williams 12, Springfield 10

In game #1, which lasted two and a half hours, Williams found itself trailing 9-4 entering the top of the fifth inning. But the Ephs put together an eight-run inning to take a 12-9 lead.

Senior pitcher Mary Beth Daub (4-3) got credit for the win, going the distance and giving up 13 hits, 10 runs (nine of which were earned). She struck out two and walked six.

Springfield’s freshman Ashley Marino got the start for the Pride, and pitched four-plus innings. She gave up five runs on five hits, four of which were home runs. She struck out four and walked two. Senior Katie Anderson came on in the fifth and faced six batters, all of whom scored, without recording an out. She picked up the loss (0-2). Sophomore Lynne Halley hurled the final three innings, and gave up two hits and one run.

Sophomore Breann Joyce went 3-for-4, knocking in three runs and scoring one for SC. Freshman Ally Rivelli also went 3-for-4, scoring one run for SC.

For Williams, Theresa Legan, Kaitlin Dinet, Amanda Correnti, and Carly Ameen all hit home runs. Legan’s home run began the Williams fifth inning, and knocked Marino out of the game. Dinet’s home run was a two-run job in the fourth.

Springfield scored once in the last of the seventh to close the gap to 12-10. The game was delayed a half-hour with two outs in the bottom of the seventh due to an injury.

Game #2 — Springfield 7, Williams 1 (5 innings; game called due to darkness)

In the second game, SC freshman righthander Jennifer Joseph went five innings and produced the complete-game victory. She gave up three hits and just the one run, walking one and striking out one.

For Williams, sophomore righthander Megan Casey also went the distance, but gave up seven runs on eight hits. Only four of the runs were earned as Williams committed four errors. She struck out two and walked four.

Breann Joyce went 2-for-3, knocking in one and scoring one for the Pride. Kelsey Dunn went 2-for-2 and added two RBI’s.

For the Ephs, three different players had the hits, including a solo home run by Dinet in the first inning.

SC scored two in the first, two in the second, and two in the third. The Pride added one more in the fifth to close out the scoring.

Springfield will play a doubleheader at MCLA at 3:30 pm Wednesday.
