Women's Lacrosse Hangs On For 15-10 Victory Over Wellesley

Springfield, Mass. – April 9, 2011 – The Springfield College womenÂ's lacrosse team raced out to a 10-2 lead and held on for a 15-10 win over visiting Wellesley College in New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon at Stagg Field.

Springfield now improves to 7-3 on the year, including a perfect 3-0 in league action. The Blue drop to 7-4, 1-1 against conference teams.

Jackie Moscardelli continued her torrid scoring pace as she netted a game-high five goals, while Nicole Soucie poured in three goals and an assist. Meagan Dobson recorded a goal and three assists and Kelly Gallo chipped in a goal and two helpers. Kelly Foley caused five turnovers in the win and Anne Versprille made six saves for the win in goal.

For the visitors, Britt Mscisz found the back of the cage four times, while both Jenny Holland and Allison Robbins scored twice. Meagan Fuchs won four draw controls and Mary Mattia made 11 saves between the pipes.

Springfield held a 30-22 advantage in shots and a 18-10 edge in ground balls. Wellesley went just 12-19 on its clear attempts as it committed 24 turnovers on the afternoon.

Moscardelli recorded a pair of goals four minutes into the contest to give Springfield a 2-0 lead that it would not relinquish. A Roy free-position goal at the 23:58 mark made it 2-1, but the Pride responded with two more goals, including another from Moscardelli, to take a 4-1 advantage. Just over a minute later, Mscisz connected for another Blue free-position goal, which would prove to be the final goal for the visitors in the opening half. The Pride closed out the half with five unanswered strikes, including Megan OÂ'BrienÂ's second goal with 18 seconds left on the clock.

The Blue set the tone to start the second half as it scored the first two goals of the stanza after both Holland and Msciz found the back of the net just under four minutes in . Springfield would go on to regain its eight-goal lead after Rebecca DiSisto bounced home a goal after a great feed by Dobson from behind the cage with 17:32 remaining. However, Wellesley would score five of the gameÂ's next six goals and get within four at 13-9 after Holland tallied an unassisted marker with 5:20 to go. Just 25 seconds later, Allie Davis gave Springfield a five-goal lead on a great individual effort. The teams traded goals in the final 2:28 as Springfield held on for the gritty victory.

Springfield will travel to take on national power Trinity College on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm.
