Box Score
Springfield, Mass. — Sept. 4, 2011 — Madison Buckley scored what proved to be the winning goal in the second half as her Brockport field hockey team defeated host Springfield College, 3-2, under gray skies at Stagg Field on Sunday afternoon. It was the season-opener for SC. Brockport now moves to 2-0.
It was a strange game in that there were times where Springfield clearly dominated, especially in the second half. But when it came to scoring, Brockport was the better team.
Springfield outshot the Eagles, 12-4, and had more penalty corners, 19-7. In the second half, SC took 14 penalty corners to Brockport’s one.
But Brockport led at the half, 2-0, and eventually took a 3-0 lead in the second half for what was seemingly a safe advantage.
The Eagles’ first goal was scored by senior midfielder Kelly-Ann Henry (Liverpool, N.Y.) with 17:19 left in the half. Her goal was unassisted.
The second goal was scored by junior midfielder Taryn Rossi (Webster, N.Y.), and was assisted by sophomore forward Danielle Henck (Sauquoit, N.Y.).
Brockport had six penalty corners to SC’s five in that half.
The Eagles scored again with 18:07 left in the contest. Buckley, a sophomore forward from Liverpool, N.Y., tallied the goal, with freshman attacker Abby Eschen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) assisting.
Throughout the second half, however, it was Springfield that was providing the relentless attack. Senior goalkeeper Amanda Del Buono (Sauquoit, N.Y.) was keeping SC off the scoreboard with some great, sprawling saves.
But with 5:18 left, the Pride finally came through when senior defender Lynne Donoghue (Barnstable, Mass.) cracked the Eagle defense.
Just 1:05 later, senior forward Kaila Dee (New Hartford, Conn.) pushed across a second goal, and the Pride was now within one with 4:13 still on the clock.
But Springfield mounted only one more threat after that, and Brockport held on for the win.
