Babson Park, Mass. – November 3, 2012 – Third-seeded Springfield College received goals from sophomore Kevin Nowak and first-year Ryan McAdoo as well as four saves from rookie goalie Billy Schmid as the Pride knocked off the second-seeded United States Coast Guard Academy, 2-0, in the semifinal round of the 2012 New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) MenÂ's Soccer Tournament at Babson College on Saturday.

  With the win, Springfield (8-9-2) advances to SundayÂ's championship game, where it will attempt to defend its conference titled against fifth-seeded MIT at 1 p.m. The Engineers earned a spot in the title game by advancing in PKs after tying top-seeded Babson, 2-2, in SaturdayÂ's first semifinal tilt. Meanwhile, Coast Guard (11-6-1) will await its postseason fate when the fields for the NCAA and ECAC New England Tournaments are announced early next week.

  Springfield nearly jumped in front just over five minutes in, but Coast Guard sophomore keeper Richie Burns made a tremendous leaping save on a header from sophomore Zach Dutter at 5:10. The Pride would be undeterred, however, as they came back with the gameÂ's first goal at 19:43, starting when junior Michael Fowler sent a short pass to the right side of the box. Nowak then corralled it and chipped a shot over the outstretched arms of Burns from just outside the six-yard box for his fourth of the season and a 1-0 Springfield advantage.

  It remained a one-goal game well into the second half, when Springfield struck again to double its lead. After Burns was whistled for tripping a streaking Springfield forward during  a race to a loose ball near the endline, McAdoo stepped up and buried the ensuing penalty kick for his first goal of the year at 71:06. Coast Guard would scramble to get on the board for the remainder of the contest, but Schmid made all four of his saves in the final 18 minutes to help Springfield come away with the 2-0 victory.

  Making just his fifth start of the season, Schmid earned his second shutout while improving to at 3-1-1. At the other end, Burns finished with two saves in defeat for Coast Guard.
