Williamstown, Mass. — April 11, 2012 — Merrilee Weston belted a long single ro knock in the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh inning of game #1, allowing the Williams College softball team to defeat its counterparts from Springfield College, 1-0, this afternoon. In game #2, the Ephs defeated the Pride, 4-2.

With the wins, Williams upped its record to 11-11, while Springfield dropped to 15-10. The Pride had its seven-game winning streak halted in game #1.

In game #1, the winning run was scored following a lead-off triple by junior Kaitlin Dinet (Pearl River, N.Y.) off tough-luck loser Ashley Marino (Harrison N.Y.), who went the distance. Marino was coming off a no-hitter yesterday against MCLA at SC’s Potter Field.

The winner was freshman Emma Harrington (Columbus, Ohio), who hurled a complete game for the Ephs.

Williams managed just three hits in game #1, while Springfield had more opportunities to score with seven hits. SC also had three walks, but could not manage to score.

Sophomore Ali Graebner (Short Hills, N.J.) made a two-out over-the-shoulder game-saving catch in the top of the seventh for Williams with the score tied at 0-0 and two SC runners on base in scoring position.

Junior shortstop Kelly Blake (Watertown, Conn.) went 3-for-4 for the Pride in that first game. Marino struck out four and walked two for SC.

In game #2, Williams took control from the outset, scoring a single run in the first inning, then adding two more in the third, and one more in the fourth.

Springfield scored its two runs in the fifth inning.

For SC, Blake went 2-for-3, meaning she finished 5-for-7 on the day. The other two hits were provided by freshmen Caitie Holik (South Windsor, Conn.) and Brittany Lally (Hudson, Mass.). Blake and Holik had doubles.

For SC, sophomore Jen Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) was the starter and loser in game #2. She allowed seven hits and four runs, three of which were earned. She struck out three and walked two. Joseph is now 7-3.

For the Ephs, Dinet was the winning pitcher. She gave up only four hits, striking out four and walking one. She is now 1-2 on the season.
