Keene, N.H. — April 17, 2012 — Sophomore Ashley Marino led her Springfield College softball team to a 6-1 victory over Keene State by hurling a complete game in the first game of a double-header this afternoon on a pleasant day at Owl Stadium. Game #2, a real see-saw affair, was called due to darkness after nine innings at 7-all.

Marino is the current NEWMAC Softball Pitcher of the Week.

With the win, Springfield recorded its 20th win of the season, and is now 20-10 overall. Keene State falls to 15-6.

Entering the game, Marino, who hails from Harrison, N.Y., was ranked 14th nationally (NCAA Division III) with a 1.05 ERA. She was also ranked 9th in “hits allowed per seven innings” at 4.11. And she was ranked tied for 21st in shutouts with five. With the win, she is now 11-5.

She allowed seven hits and just one run, striking out six and walking none.

The Owls scored first on a solo home run by Joyce with two outs in the second inning. In three innings, that was the only run of the game.

Springfield then scored three runs in the top of the fourth — doing so on two hits and with the help of two Owl errors.

The Pride added single runs in the fifth, sixth, and seventh — taking advantage of many Owl giveaways. Keene State committed five errors, and added four walks and four wild pitches, all of which contributed to SC’s six runs.

Junior shortstop Kelly Blake (Watertown, Conn.) and Marino each had two hits for the visitors, which had six hits all told.

In the second game, Keene State led 4-3 entering the top of the seventh, but freshman Amy Entel hit a ringing two-out double to tie the score with Chelsea Leader scoring all the way from first base.

Keene State tied it at 4-all in the bottom of the seventh. Each team scored a run in the eighth to enter the ninth at 5-5.

SC scored two runs in the top of the ninth on a two-run single by Entel. But the Owls scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth with two outs to tie it again at 7-all. The game was then “called” because of darkness.
