Babson Park, Mass. – October 19, 2013 - The Springfield College men’s soccer team had the advantage in shots on goal, but Babson College picked up a 2-0 victory in New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon at Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Junior Peter Van Noppen (Providence, R.I.) had a goal and an assist, and classmate Justin Laurenzo (Park Ridge, N.J.) scored for the second consecutive game.

With its second straight win, Babson is now 9-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference while Springfield, which is currently ranked fifth in New England, saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end and is now 11-3-0 overall and 3-2-0 in league play.

Laurenzo gave the hosts a 1-0 lead at the 20:57 mark of the first half, heading home a corner kick from Van Noppen from just outside the six-yard box. His fifth tally of the season came just minutes after he missed wide on header from 10 yards off an earlier corner by Van Noppen.

The PrideÂ's best scoring chance in the opening half came in the 41st minute after senior Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) was taken down just outside the box. Malone took the ensuing free kick and hit a blast from 19 yards that was punched over the crossbar and out of danger by Babson senior goalkeeper Jackson Klein (Maplewood, N.J.).

The Beavers doubled their advantage just 2:43 into the second half when Van Noppen struck for his second goal of the season. The junior midfielder collected the ball on the right flank and hit a 30-yard blast that beat the Springfield goalkeeper and deflected off the inside of the left post for a 2-0 edge.

The Pride had its chances to cut into the deficit throughout the second half. Junior Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) headed a long ball into the box over Klein in the 54th minute, but junior back Pat Ellis (Braintree, Mass.) was able to clear the ball out of the goal mouth to maintain the BeaversÂ' two-goal lead.

KleinÂ's toughest save of the afternoon came in the 74th minute as he came charging off his line to block an attempt by Sommer, who had gotten by the Babson back line. After the initial save and with Klein still recovering, Sommer popped his second attempt just over the crossbar.

Klein made five stops to record his second consecutive shutout, while Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) stopped four shots for Springfield.

The Pride held a 16-15 advantage in shots while Babson had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

Babson returns to action on Sunday afternoon when it travels to Bowdoin for a 2 p.m. start while Springfield will be at Keene State on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m.
