Springfield, Mass. – April 13, 2013 – The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team raced out to a 10-0 lead after the first half as it defeated Mass. Maritime, 15-4, in a Pilgrim League victory at Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Springfield improves to 3-0 in league play, 5-7 overall. The Buccaneers fall to 2-8, 0-3.

Ryon Lynch, the most recent Pilgrim League Player of the Week, continued to be the hot hand for the Pride offensively, tallying two goals and two assists. It was a team win for Springfield, though, as two-goal performances were turned in by Jon Santer, Matt Fleisher, Kevin Freeman, Brendan BossBryce Serriello. Ryan Murphy chipped in with two assists, as did Kevin Sainte. Christopher Loy (7-for-9) and Branden Fernandez (8-for-9) were crucial in controlling the face-off “X”.

Rob Maher blanked the Buccaneers in the first half to earn the win, while Connor Nash, Kevin MacBride, Kevin Ostrom, and Doug Sattler handled the goal-keeping duties in the second half.

C.J. Hanson scored twice, while fellow freshmen Matthew Montuori and Pat Clifford each contributed a goal for the Buccaneers. Paul Painten notched 18 saves in 45 minutes in net.

Springfield jumped out to a first-quarter lead when Santer scored from the crease, assisted by Matt Dalton, at the 12:02 mark. A Murphy to Freeman connection resulted in the PrideÂ's second goal, followed by a Serriello man-up score. Hardly a minute later, FleisherÂ's diving shot in transition staked Springfield to a 4-0 lead.

The second quarter was less than 10 seconds old when Boss scored the PrideÂ's fifth goal, assisted by Lynch. The offensive barrage did not cease until the horn sounded for halftime. Springfield netted a total of six shots, good for a 10-0 halftime lead.

Taking advantage of a Springfield penalty early in the third quarter, Mass. MaritimeÂ's Hanson put the visitors on the scoreboard with a man-up goal from the left side of the crease. Answering right back was SpringfieldÂ's Sainte, with an unassisted man-up goal of his own.

The gameÂ's most memorable play came at the 6:51 mark in the third quarter. Pride goalie Connor Nash made a save, and rather than pass the ball off to a teammate, took it right down the center of the field into Buccaneer territory. Nash took advantage of the opportunity, whipping a low shot into the back of the net.

In the final 15 minutes, Springfield was hurt by penalties, resulting in two man-up goals, and one at even strength, by the Buccaneers. Santer notched the final Springfield point of the day, scoring from the crease on an assist by Devin Abad. Mass. MaritimeÂ's Clifford managed to sneak one past Sattler with under a minute to play for a 15-4 final score.

Springfield dominated the face-off battle, winning 19 of 22. The ground ball advantage also went to the Pride, 35-22. Neither team played a particularly crisp game, with Springfield committing 27 turnovers to Mass. MaritimeÂ's 26.

Springfield returns to action for a Pilgrim League road game against Clark on Wednesday at 7:00 pm.
