Springfield, Mass. – September 7, 2013 – The Brockport field hockey team beat Springfield College, 3-2 in overtime, on Saturday in the first game of the Zenaty Invitational before Husson shut out Plymouth State, 2-0, in the second game of the day.
Brockport and Husson will square off in the championship game on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. Springfield and Plymouth State will play Sunday morning at 11:00 in a consolation game.
Several members of Springfield College's first ever varsity field hockey team from 1963 were present on Saturday to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of womenÂ's varsity athletics at Springfield College.
Brockport 3, Springfield 2 (OT): The game was back-and-forth with Brockport matching each of SpringfieldÂ's goals early on to force overtime.
It didnÂ't take long for Brockport to find the back of the net one more time, though, as the game-winner came just 1:41 into overtime. Jackie Massoni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) passed the corner to Jessica Blind (Webster, N.Y.), who made a move around the Springfield defender and ripped it into the goal for the win. No assist was given on the goal.
Springfield got on the board first on a goal by MK Murray (Killingworth, Conn.) in the first half. Sarah Ducharme (Dudley, Mass.) got the assist.
Brockport struck first in the second half, on a game-tying goal from Madison Buckley (Liverpool, N.Y.). Senior Jackie Massoni (Bay Shore, N.Y.) controlled the ball on the left post and crossed it to Buckley for the finish.
The Pride took the lead for a second time just 10 minutes later on a goal by Jillian Macdonald (South Yarmouth, Mass.), who scored off a corner. Libby Hart (Chatham, Mass.), took the corner and tallied the assist.
Brockport wasnÂ't done yet though, tying it up with just under eight minutes left in the game. Megan Usher (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) controlled the ball up top, then passed to Abby Eschen (Cazenovia, N.Y.) in the middle to score, forcing overtime.
Husson 2, Plymouth State 0:
After a scoreless first half, Husson got on the board just four minutes into the second on Saturday at the Zenaty Invitational.
Britt Mellor (Melfast, Maine) took the corner for the Eagles, passing it up top to Melissa Souza (East Bridgewater, Mass.) who tallied the gameÂ's first goal.
With 23:54 left in the game, Husson got an insurance goal from Liz Noddin (Skowhegan, Maine) on an assist from Mariah Arno (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine). Arno tapped it to Noddin from the top of the arc and Noddin found the back of the net to put Husson up 2-0.
The Eagles had one more chance with just under nine minutes left in the game, but ArnoÂ's penalty shot missed wide left.
Plymouth goalie Hillary Lemelin (Milan, N.H.) finished the day with 14 saves while Husson goalie Maicee Gustin (Dexter, Maine) made six saves to earn to shutout.
