Box Score Williamstown, Mass. - October 1, 2014 - Despite a two-goal second half, including tallies from juniors Katie Gill (Wallingford, Conn.) and Olivia Cabral (Sayville, N.Y.), the Springfield College field hockey team fell to Williams College, 3-2, on Wednesday evening at Williamson Field.
With the loss, the Pride fall to 3-5 overall, while the Ephs improve to 7-3-1 on the season. Williams out shot Springfield 10-8, while also holding a 9-6 advantage in penalty corners. Springfield goalkeeper, Juliana Barrasso (Bayport, N.Y.) finished the contest with three saves, while Margaret Draper (Belmont, Mass.) finished with four saves and picked up the victory.
The first Williams goal was scored after a team defensive effort sent the ball towards the the attacking end. Off a corner, first year Hannah Goodrick inserted a feed to junior Annie VanWagenen, who knocked the ball to the far post. Barrasso made a save, but sophomore Brigid Bruno ran in anticipating a rebound. Before the Pride could clear the ball, Bruno tapped it into the goal at the 12:24 mark.
With another corner in the 21st minute, Williams tested the same play they used earlier with Goodrick inserting a ball to VanWagenen again. She sent it across the top of the circle to senior co-captain Caitlin Conlon, who moved it low to sophomore Rachel Brisette waiting by the near-post. Brisette took a poised shot and sailed it past the keeper.
Just 1:46 into the second half, Williams extended its lead to 3-0 after a mix-up in the circle, which senior Haley Ladd-Luthringshauser fired in a goal.
The Pride soon answered back with a strike in the 43rd minute. Springfield set up for another corner and Kristina Krull (Leicester, Mass.) inserted it a feed to Cabral, who sent a powerful shot cleanly past all opponents.
Springfield continued to push with its late rally, and after earning another corner, Ann Mahoney (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) sent in a pass after receiving the intial bid, which Gill blasted home just just over 10 minutes left in regulation.
The Pride will return home to Stagg Field on Saturday, where it will resume New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) schedule with a contest against Wheaton College. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
