Hilton Head, S.C. – March 20, 2014 - The Springfield College men’s tennis team capitalized in singles play to top the University of Scranton, 5-4 on Thursday.
The Pride wrapped up its Spring Break trip with a 3-1 record in South Carolina. With the win over Scranton on Thursday, Springfield improves to 5-2 on the season. Justin Danielewicz (Portland, Conn.) and Kyle Beynor (Prospect, Conn.) paced the Pride with wins in both singles and doubles.
Springfield swept the first four singles matches, led by Tanner DeVarennes (Lee, Mass.) who earned a win in No. 1 singles (2-6, 6-4, 11-9). Danielewicz won second singles (7-6 (7-4), 6-1), Beynor took third singles (6-3, 0-6, 10-1) and Joe Giannelli (Watertown, Conn.) easily won No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Scranton won two of three doubles matches, but Springfield’s doubles team of Danielewicz and Beynor came up a 9-8 (7-5) win in No. 2 doubles to lead the Pride.
Springfield will return home then travel to take on Rhode Island College on the road on Wednesday 3:30 p.m.
