Exeter, N.H. – March 27, 2012 – The Bowdoin College men’s lacrosse team edged Springfield College, 9-8, on Tuesday evening in a battle of nationally-ranked squads in a game played at Exeter High School.The 14th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 5-1 with the win while the 18th-ranked Pride drop to 4-3.
Mike Delia tallied a team-best four points on three assists and a goal, while both Shane Ferguson and Dylan Sheehan scored twice. Robert Maher finished the evening with seven saves in goal.
After Ferguson buried an unassisted goal 2:44 into the contest, the Polar Bears poured in the game’s next five goals to take a 5-1 lead with 13:51 left in the second quarter.
The Pride answered with a five-goal run of their own, taking a 6-5 lead on a Ryon Lynch goal with 12:43 on the clock in the third period. Sheehan netted his two goals in the run, while Ryan Murphy struck with just three seconds left in the first half to make it a five-all game heading into halftime.
After Lynch’s marker made it 6-5, Bowdoin responded with two goals within a 1:07 span to regain a 7-6 lead. The advantage was short lived as Delia struck just eight seconds later to make it 7-7, only to have Bowdoin score 40 seconds later to snag an 8-7 lead.
Eric Balslov found the back of the cage 1:58 into the final quarter to even things for the final time before Bowdoin’s Mark Filbotte netted an unassisted goal at the 7:46 mark which proved to be the game-winner.
Springfield will open up Pilgrim Lacrosse League play on Saturday when it hosts Regis at 1:00 pm.
