Box Score Springfield, Mass. - November 11, 2015 - After qualifying for the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship Tournament for the second time in the last three seasons, the Springfield College men's soccer program picked up a 4-1 win over Colby-Sawyer in the quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, Springfield, which matched the Division III program record for wins in a single season, improves to 15-4-1 on the season, and advances to play Wentworth Institute of Technology in the ECAC Semifinals on Saturday at top-seed Endicott College in Beverly, Mass. With the loss, the Chargers close their 2015 season with a mark of 11-8.
Senior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) posted two stops in the victory, while his counterpart Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.), finished with six saves in the loss. Springfield held an 22-5 shot advantage throughout 90 minutes of play, while the Pride also held an 8-2 margin in corner kicks.
The Chargers opened the scoring just 8:34 into the contest, when Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) put in a cross from the right sideline, that went past the net before Eddie Garcia (Demascus, Md.) saved the ball from going out of bounds and played it back towards the cage, only to be hit into the net by Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) for his team-leading 18th goal of the season.
The Pride quickly countered with a goal of its own, when Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) threw a ball in from Springfield's right sideline, that was tipped by Connor Archambault (Torrance, Calif.), finding the foot of Cam Powell (Housatonic, Mass.), who tapped the ball past Sacks to even the score at one goal apiece with 27:41 remaining in the first stanza.
Springfield would gain a one-goal advantage just 5:21 later, when sophomore Curtis Bolduc (South Windsor, Mass.) took control of the ball at the mid-line and hit a shot on cage, that squeaked through the legs of Sacks to give the Pride a 2-1 lead with 22:20 left in the opening half.
Just 3:37 into the second frame, Springfield pushed its lead to two, when Brad Deckel (Lansdale, Pa.) sent in a ball from the mid-line, that was headed towards the cage by Alvaro, finding the head of Harrison Davis (Merrick, N.Y.) who was able to direct the ball past Sacks for his second goal of the season.
Capping the Pride's scoring on the evening, Tim Wood (Derry, N.H.) sent a ball in from well outside the box, that was run onto perfectly by junior forward Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.), who headed the ball over the out-stretched hands of Sacks for Springfield's fourth tally of the night.
