Box Score Cambridge, Mass. - November 7, 2015 - Despite controlling play for a majority of the contest, the Springfield College men's soccer program suffered a 1-0 setback to top-seeded MIT in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship Tournament Semifinals on Saturday afternoon at Jack Barry Field.
With the loss, Springfield, which earned a spot in the NEWMAC Semifinals for the first time since the 2012 season after beating WPI, 2-1, on Wednesday, falls to 14-4-1 on the season, while MIT, which was ranked No. 17 in the latest NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Rankings, improves to 16-1-1, and will face either Wheaton or Babson in the NEWMAC Championship tilt on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Senior goalkeeper Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) was phenomenal all contest, and finished the contest with four saves, while his counterpart, Jake Amereno (Commack, N.Y.) registered five stops over 90 minutes of play. Both sides finished the contest with 14 shots apiece and both tallied four corner kicks.
Following a handball committed by Springfield just outside its own box with 2:14 remaining in the contest, MIT's Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) sent in a direct free kick, that trickled through the Pride's defense, and found the foot of Matthew De La Ossa (New York, N.Y.) for the game-winning strike to lift the Engineers to victory.
Springfield's best opportunity of the contest came with 14:27 remaining in the opening stanza, when junior forward Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up a through ball sent by freshman midfielder Xavi Arroyo (Concord, Mass.) and chipped a shot that hit the right post, before senior midfielder Connor Archambault (Torrance, Calif.) picked up the rebound and took a bid at the cage, but Amereno came up with a big save to keep the Pride at bay.
