Men's Lacrosse Uses Strong Defensive Effort To Best Stevens, 7-6

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. - February 28, 2015 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team held Stevens scoreless for nearly a 40-minute stretch and hung on for a 7-6 non-conference win at Stagg Field on Saturday afternoon. The win boosts the Pride's record to 2-1, while the Ducks even their record to 2-2.

Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) had a goal and two assists in the win, while fellow attackman Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.) tacked on two goals and an assist.  Brendan Dooley (Setauket, N.Y.) anchored the defense with four ground balls and four caused turnovers and Kevin Ostrom (Barnstable, Mass.) made eight saves in goal.

Springfield held a 38-31 advantage in shots and forced Stevens into 25 turnovers and just 13-for-22 on clears.

For the Ducks, eight different players registered at least one point, while Connor McKeon tallied one goal and one assist on the afternoon.

Stevens opened up the scoring on an unassisted strike from Andrew Scrutchfield 1:59 into the opening quarter.  The Pride answered back just 49 seconds later off a terrific feed into the crease from Sheehan that Abate finished in traffic.

Connor Towne took a McKeon pass and finished low at the 8:19 mark, only to have Springfield respond a minute later on a goal from Ben Menard (South Hadley, Mass.) off Sheehan's second helper of the day.

Abate then put Springfield ahead for the first time on the afternoon as he turned and fired home a shot with 38 ticks left on the clock in the first.

The visitors had a great start to second quarter, pouring in three unanswered goals to take a 5-3 cushion with 10:47 left in the half.  McKeon started the run with an unassisted goal from 12 yards out 1:06 into the frame before Michael Serrante provided a highlight reel goal, finishing from his knees after falling down at the 12:38 mark.  Anthony Raposo stepped into a shot from 15 yards out with 10:47 on the clock to finish the run.

Springfield responded with the final two goals of the first half to even the game at five goals apiece.  Bryce Serriello (Cape Cod, Mass.) struck first with a bounce shot on the run to bring the Pride within one, and following a well-executed clear, Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) found Sheehan in transition for a goal with five seconds left in the half.

The Pride accounted for the only goal of the third quarter and did so after a tremendous ride on a Stevens clear.  Following a caused turnoverby Brendan Boss (West Springfield, Mass.), Abate found Jake Versprille (Franklin, Mass.) in front of the cage to put Springfield ahead for good just 1:59 into the second half.

LaGuerre added to Springfield's lead early in the fourth quarter, as he buried a feed from Boss 1:07 into the final quarter.  Stevens scored its first goal since the 10:47 mark of the second quarter on a Matt Ferentini unassisted goal with 2:56 left in regulation.  The Ducks won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout, but was unable to complete its comeback and the Pride held onto the ball for the win.

The Pride will play again on March 7 when it heads to take on nationally-ranked Endicott for a 3:00 pm meeting.
