Softball Picks Up First Victory of Season Against McDaniel After Falling to Farmingdale State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Orlando, Fla.- March 16, 2015- The Springfield College softball team splits a pair of outings in its second day of the Rebel Spring Games on Monday.  Farmingdale State outlasted the Pride, 6-5, in 9 innings in the opener before the Pride bested McDaniel by a 5-3 decision in its second outing.

Springfield now stands at 1-3 on the year.

The Pride will continue its spring trip with two games Tuesday against Ramapo and Messiah.  Game times are 12:15 pm and 2:30 pm.

Farmingdale State 6, Springfield 5 (9 innings)

Springfield was outlasted by Farmingdale, 6-5, in 9 innings in the Pride's first game of the day on Monday.

The game's first run was scored by the Rams in the bottom of the first inning by way of an RBI single off the bat of Meghan Acton.

The Pride got on the score board in the fourth inning when Camdyn Morgillo (West Haven, Conn.)  came around to touch home plate.  Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) connected for a single to leftfield, to allow Morgillo to run home to tie the game up 1-1.  Pitches later, Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) belted a double to left center to score Navarro.  The three run inning was concluded with a sacrifice fly to right field from Brielle Engelbrecht (Granby, Mass).

The Rams produced two runs in the bottom part of the sixth to even the game up at 3-3.

Springfield's bats were silenced until the eighth inning, when the international tie breaker was put in effect. Morgillo was sacrificed over to third base by Brittany Lally (Hudson, Mass.), and Joseph made connection on her second hit of the day, which allowed Morgillo to score from third base.

With Springfield up 4-3 in the bottom half of the eighth, Farmingdale's Sam Johrden, scored off a fielder's choice.

Springfield retaliated with a run of its own in the top of the 9th, after Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) ripped an RBI double to allow Engelbrecht to score.  However, that run would not hold up as Farmingdale served up a run to tie the game and then later earned the walk-off win with the go-ahead run.

Springfield 5, McDaniel 3

Springfield captured its first win of the season to McDaniel College in the second game of the day with a 5-3 victory.

Alicia Pavadore (Taunton, Mass.) started the momentum for the Pride in the bottom half of the second inning with a single up the middle.  After an error and a fielder's choice, the Pride found itself with runners on first and second for Melissa Nelson's (Milford, Conn.) hot bat.  The junior roped a single to center field to score Emily Reynolds (Charlton, Mass.) and advanced Brielle Engelbrecht (Granby, Mass.) to third.  Nelson motored herself to second to put runners in scoring position for Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.) . Webb took advantage as she drilled a single up the center to send both runners home.

McDaniel responded with three runs of its own in the next frame, as Tayler Hishon started the Green Terror off with a single to right.  The next batter, Lindsey Miller, reached on a fielding error, to put runners on first and second.  After a walk and a fielder's choice Megan Liebknecht stepped up to the plate with one out and two runners in scoring position.  Liebknecht produced, putting the ball in play to force an error and put McDaniel on the board.  Carly Deichman tacked on two more with an infield single, to tie the game up 3-3.

Engelbrecht and Nelson delivered back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fourth, and then worked their way around the bases for the go-ahead runs.  After a wild pitch to put Nelson on second and Engelbrecht on third, a wild ball four was issued to Webb, which allowed Engelbrecht to score and Nelson to advance to third.  A few pitches later, Nelson scored off an errant throw to first base.  That would put Springfield back up 5-3, and prove to be all it needed.

Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) buckled down in the sixth and seventh as she allowed only one hit and a walk.  The freshman would pick up the first win of the season for the Pride as she pitched a solid four innings, surrendering a hit and two walks, while picking up six strike outs.

Nelson tallied three hits in four at-bats.  Webb, Pavadore and Engelbrecht also contributed hits for the Pride.  Engelbrecht and Nelson scored four of Springfield's five runs.
