Amherst, Mass. - March 24, 2015 - Bryce Serriello (Cape Cod, Mass.) registered two goals and two assists, however the fifth-ranked Amherst College men's lacrosse team bested Springfield College, 14-8, on Tuesday night at Gooding Field.

Springfield dropped to 3-4 on the year, with all four of its setback having come to nationally-ranked teams.  Amherst, which broke into the top five in the USILA Division III National Coaches Poll, improves to 8-0 this season.

In a physical matchup that featured 21 penalties, Springfield held a 44-31 edge in shots, including a 30-12 cushion in the second half.  Both Tony LaGuerre (Shrub Oak, N.Y.) and Dylan Sheehan (Massapequa, N.Y.) recorded two goals and an assist, while netminder Kevin Ostrom (Cape Cod, Mass.) made eight saves in goal.    At the face-off "X", Mark Gonzalez (Tolland, Conn.) went 15-for-25 and snagged eight ground balls.

Kane Haffey was impressive for Amherst on the night, netting eight goals on nine shots, while Quinn Maroney handed out five assists.  Cody Tranbarger was equally as strong in cage, notching 16 saves en route to the win.

The Lord Jeffs netted four goals in a 4:19 span in the first quarter to take an early 4-0 lead, but consecutive strikes from Serriello and Sheehan just 48 seconds apart cut the hosts lead in half.

Amherst answered with the next four goals, including three-straight from Haffey, only to have Serriello close out the second quarter scoring with a man-up strike off a field from Tom Hurley (Goffstown, N.H.).

The Pride scored three of the first five goals in the second half, using markers from Dom Abate (Beverly, Mass.), Brendan Boss (West Springfield, Mass.), and LaGuerre to close within 10-6 with eight left in the third.  However, the hosts used a pair of Charlie Gill goals to head into the fourth quarter with a 12-6 cushion.

Sheehan's second of the night just over two minutes into the final quarter brought Springfield within five, but Haffey sealed the game with two man up goals in a 1:07 span  as the Lord Jeffs lead ballooned to seven.  LaGuerre netted the game's final goal off a look from Sheehan with 4:19 on the clock as Amherst held on for the victory.

Springfield will open up its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday when it hosts Babson at 1:00 pm in a rematch of last year's league title game.
