Softball Combines For 17 Runs In NEWMAC Opening Sweep of Emerson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Boston, Mass.-March 29, 2015- The Springfield College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep as it defeated Emerson College in a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games on Sunday afternoon at Rotch Playground in Boston.

The Pride is now 4-8 on the year, but more importantly, improves to 2-0 in its conference schedule.

The Pride will return to the field on Tuesday March 31st in a non-conference matchup against Western Connecticut State.  The game will be played at Central Connecticut State University, with a 3:30pm start.

Springfield 10, Emerson 2

Emerson's Lyndi McIntrye (Wichita, Kan.) started the scoring off in the bottom of the first with an RBI single up the middle to put the hosts on the board.  Christina Guessferd (Hudson, N.H.) followed suit with an RBI single to score McIntyre, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Lions.

The Pride got its bats going in the fourth when junior Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) connected for her first homerun of the season.  Junior captain Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) tied things up a few batters later with an RBI double to left field to score sophomore Alicia Pavadore (Taunton, Mass.) from third.

Springfield cracked the game open in the top of the fifth when Pavadore smacked a single to center to score Paige Laperle (Auburn, Mass.) with the go-ahead run.  That would prove to be all the Pride would need, as after a walk with the bases loaded, another hit from Nelson and a fielding error which allowed Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) to reach safely at first, Springfield took a 7-2 lead.

An inning later the Pride would pick up three more runs, starting with Joseph's second run batted in of the game.  After Tasha Polana (Orange, Mass.) drifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Joseph, Nelson would drive in the final run of the game with a single to score Pavadore.

The Lions could not respond in the bottom of the inning to finish the game with a score of 10-2 in six innings.

Nelson went 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Camdyn Morgillo (West Haven, Conn.) chipped in with three hits in four out bats, with two runs scored.  The Pride connected for an impressive total of 14 hits.

Morgillo went the distance on the mound as the sophomore only surrendering two runs on four hits.

Springfield 7, Emerson 2

Springfield got things going in the first inning to put the Pride up 1-0 after Drobiak connected for a double to left which scored Polana.

McIntyre retaliated in the bottom of the inning for Emerson with an RBI of her own.

With the score tied at one a piece, Pavadore drilled the second double of the game to score junior captain Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.).  The next batter up, Brianna Weltlich (Southampton, Mass.), traded places with Pavadore with a double of her own.  Brielle Engelbrecht (Granby, Mass.) kept the rally going, hammering a double as well to center to score Weltlich from second.  A few batters later, freshman Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass) produced a single to left to allow Engelbrecht to easily score from third base.  Nelson would head home on a fielding error to add some insurance and conclude the five run second inning.

Emerson would add its second run of the game off a double from Jacqueline DeFusco (East Greenwich, R.I.).  On the hit Shelby Carney (North Reading, Mass.) motored her way home to put the score at 6-2.

Springfield responded in the top of the sixth with another RBI double, this time off the bat of Navarro.  The Pride would silence that bats of the Lions for the next two innings to take the 7-2 victory and first double header sweep of the season.

The Pride ripped the ball for 14 hits, eigth of them being doubles.  Engelbrecht and Drobiak led the pack with two apiece.  Engelbrecht was perfect at the plate with three hits, driving in and scoring a run.  Navarro also collected two hits in three at-bats.

Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.) collected the win, as she pitched four innings, allowing three hits and a run.
