Box Score 2 Babson Park, Mass. - April 11, 2015 - The Springfield College softball team split a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contests with Babson College on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
With the split, Springfield now holds a record of 10-14 overall and 8-4 in league play. Babson is now 15-11 overall and 7-5 in the NEWMAC.
Springfield will host Coast Guard for a pair on Sunday, April 12 beginning at 1 p.m.
Springfield 4, Babson 1 -- Game One
The Pride did all its damage in the opener with two outs in the top of the second, scoring four unearned runs to build a 4-0 lead. Freshman Carianna Gasdia (Wakefield, Mass.) reached on a bunt single and junior Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) scored from second on a throwing error to make it 1-0. Classmate Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) followed with a two-run single to left and then scored on an base hit down the left field line to give Springfield a four-run cushion.
Both teams stranded a pair of runners in the third, and Babson finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Ravetier reached after being hit to lead off the inning, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches and scored to make it 4-1 on a ground out by Smith.
The Beavers threatened again in the sixth as junior Caitie Benoit (Williamstown, Mass.) singled up the middle and Hayes followed with a knock through the left side to put runners on first and second with one out, but were unable to push any runs across.
Freshman pitcher Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) gave up just the one earned run on five hits while striking out four over 5.1 innings to earn the win for the Pride. Jordyn Moquin (Southington, Conn.) allowed just one hit over 1.2 innings to earn her first save of the season.
Hayes took the loss allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out five over seven innings for Babson.
Babson 8, Springfield 1 -- Game Two
Senior Meghan Hayes (Robbinsville, N.Y.) and junior Madison Dinaso (Ardsley, N.Y.) both homered and combined to drive in four runs as Babson College won game two, 8-1.
For the Pride, freshman Olivia Gonzalez (East Hartford, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Pride.
Dinaso homered to lead off the bottom of the first to give Babson a 1-0 lead, but Gonzalez came through with a two-out single to plate first-year Brianna Weltlich (Southampton, Mass.) as Springfield tied the game in the top of the second. The Beavers wasted little time responding though, as they scored four times with two outs in the bottom of the frame to break the game open.
Hayes smacked a one-out triple to left center and came around to score on a passed ball for a 2-1 lead. Lacy drove in senior Nicole Ravetier (Cranford, N.J.) with a single to left, and Dinaso followed with an RBI double to left center to make it a three-run game. Sophomore Leslie Moore (Atkinson, N.H.) then capped the rally with a base hit to right center which scored Dinaso to make it 5-1.
Hayes retired the side in order in the top of the third and then hit a solo blast to left in the bottom of the inning to give Babson a 6-1 advantage. Smith came in to score on an error and Dinaso followed with an RBI single to plate Lacy for an 8-1 lead.
The Pride put a runner on in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Hayes and first-year Ali Reilly (New Canaan, Conn.) combined to retire the final nine batters of the game in order. Hayes (10-4) allowed just one earned run on four hits over six innings to earn the win, and Reilly recorded a pair of strikeouts as part of her perfect seventh inning.
Moquin suffered the loss for Springfield, giving up four earned runs on four hits in just 0.2 innings of relief.
