Box Score Babson Park, Mass. - September 26, 2015 - The Springfield College field hockey program dropped a 5-0 decision to No. 19 Babson College on Saturday afternoon at MacDowell Field. With the loss, Springfield's record is now 4-4 overall and 0-2 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, while the Beavers improve to 10-0 on the year, and 2-0 in conference.
Coming into this afternoon's contest, Babson was ranked 19th in the Division III according to the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) national rankings. In the contest, the Beavers held a 21-6 advantage in shots, and 15-3 margin in penalty corners.
For the Pride, frreshman Emmalie Drake (Pittsford, N.Y.) started her first collegiate contest, and made three saves on the afternoon, while her counterpart, Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.) finished the contest with six stops of her own. Springfield's Libby Hart (Chatham, Mass.) and Dani Sweet (Charlton, Mass.) both finished with two shots apeice.
Babson struck just 2:44 into the contest, when sophomore Elise Towers (Cicero, N.Y.) found the back of the net to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead, before junior Nicole Smith (Barrington, R.I.) added to the hosts lead, registering an unassisted goal just 11:59 into the game to make it 2-0, Babson.
Just 2:03 later, Towers picked up her second tally of the game, giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
Springfield's defensive unit was able to hold Babson's offense at bay for a majority of the second half, but the Beavers were able to find the back of the net twice in the final 10:13 of the game, including goals from Kelsi McDougle (Hopedale, Mass.) and Ashley Tango (Reading, Mass.) to give the Beavers a 5-0 lead.
