Box Score 2 Kissimmee, Fla - March 15, 2016 - Led by standout performances from sophomore Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) and junior Alicia Pavadore (Taunton, Mass.), the Springfield College softball program picked up a pair of impressive wins over Ramapo and Utica on Tuesday morning at the Osceola Softball Complex.
With the wins, Springfield improves to 5-1 on the season, and has now picked up three walk-off victories in six contests this year.
Up next, the Pride will have Wednesday off, before returing to the diamond on Thursday, March 15 when it will take on Dubuque and Washington College at 9 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.
Springfield 2, Ramapo 0 -- Game One
Loda pitched a complete-game four-hit shutout, leading the Springfield College softball program to a 2-0 victory over Ramapo in the first of two games on Tuesday morning at the Osceola Softball Complex.
With the win, the Pride has now won four of its first five games, and improves to 4-1 overall, while the Roadrunners fall to 1-4 on the year.
For Ramapo, Katrina Buczkowski (Buffalo, N.Y.) also pitched a complete game, and struck out six, while surrendering five hits and two runs in the loss. With the win, Loda improves to 2-1 on the season.
It took until the top of the fifth inning to break the silence, but the Pride would take a 1-0 advantage in the contest when Loda drilled a double into the left-center gap, scoring Dani Gray (Milford, Conn.) from first base. The next batter, Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) then cracked a double off the left field fence, bringing around Loda to make it 2-0, Springfield.
Springfield 4, Utica 3 (8 Innings) -- Game Two
With two outs and a full-count on her in the bottom of 8th inning, Pavadore tallied a pinch-hit RBI single to center, scoring freshman Sam Cox (Longmeadow, Mass.) from third to give the Pride its third walk-off victory of the week.
The inning began with Cox being put on second for the International Tiebreaker, who was pushed to third following a sacrifice bunt from Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.). After Jordyn Moquin (Plantsville, Conn.) lined out to second, Pavadore pinch hit for Emily Reynolds (Charlton, Mass.), and drove in Cox to seal the victory for the Pride.
Junior Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.) got the nod in the game, and picked up her second victory of the season, pitching 8.0 innings, giving up six hits and striking out one. For Utica, Abby Monroe (Watertown, N.Y.) pitched 7.1 innings, giving up five hits, while Brittany Meka (Averill Park, N.Y.) came on and gave up the game-winning single.
Springfield took an early 1-0 lead over the Pioneers in the bottom of the first, when Webb got caught in a run-down between first and second, allowing Navarro to steal home, thus giving the Pride a one-run lead. Springfield would tack on another run in the bottom of the third, when Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) smoked a ball down the right field line, scoring Reynolds from third.
In the bottom of the fifth, Springfield extended its lead to three when Webb got caught in another run-down, this time between second and third, which allowed Navarro to cross the plate again to make it 3-0, Pride.
In its last at-bats, Utica rallied for three runs, benefitting from a 2-RBI double off the bat of Alysa Russell (Mechanicville, N.Y.) to even the score heading into the final innings.
After Cring shut down the Pioneers in the top half of the eighth, thanks to a pair of impressive defensive plays at short from Cox, Pavadore solidified the Pride's victory with her late-game heroics.
