Softball Sweeps Smith College in Friday NEWMAC Doubleheader

Springfield, Mass. - April 8, 2016 - Senior captain Jenna Webb (Harrison, N.Y.) and junior Elizabeth Joseph (Stamford, Conn.) put on an offensive show, and sophomore Talia Loda (East Haven, Conn.) put forth a dominant pitching performance, en route to the Springfield College softball team defeating Smith College twice on Friday afternoon at Stagg Field.

With the wins, the Pride is now 13-7 overall and 6-2 in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC), while the Pioneers fall to 6-12 on the season, and 3-5 in league play.

Springfield took the first of the two games, 3-0, before besting Smith in the second, 9-3.

Up next, Springfield will travel to Cambridge, Mass. for a pair of games with NEWMAC frontrunner MIT on Saturday, April 9 at 1 p.m.

Springfield 3, Smith 0 -- Game One

Led by a dominant pitching performance from Loda, the Springfield College softball team blanked Smith College, 3-0, in the first of two games in NEWMAC action on Friday afternoon at Stagg Field.

Loda pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout en route to her fifth win of the season, as she also picked up five strikeouts on the afternoon. Her counterpart, Rowan Turner (Prairie Village, Kan.) pitched six innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs, while also fanning three Pride batters.

At the dish, the duo of Webb and Melissa Nelson (Milford, Conn.) eached registered an RBI, while Alicia Pavadore (Taunton, Mass.) was 2-for-3 at the plate in the contest.

It took until the bottom of the fifth inning to break the silence, but with one-out and the bases loaded, Sam Cox (Longmeadow, Mass.) drilled a ground ball to third, but an error on the play allowed Webb to cross home and give the Pride a 1-0 lead heading into the sixth inning.

Springfield tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth, when Simone Morin (Plantsville, Conn.) led off the inning with a bloop single into center field, before Nelson dropped a single into right-center field, scoring Morin from second. Next up, Webb drilled a double over the head of the left fielder, plating Nelson from first base to make it 3-0, Springfield.

Loda came out in the top of the seventh and picked up the final three outs to pick up the shut-out victory.

Springfield 9, Smith 3 -- Game Two

The second game of the doubleheader between Springfield and Smith College was highlighted by the impressive offensive showings from Webb, Cox and Joseph, who combined for seven RBI in the contest.

At the plate, Webb was 1-for-3 and two RBI, including a two-run double in the bottom of the third inning, while Cox went 1-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored. Additionally, Joseph notched her third home run of the season when she jacked a two-run home run over the center field fence in the bottom of the second inning to give the Pride a 2-1 lead.

Nicole Cring (Cooperstown, N.Y.) got the nod for the Pride, and pitched 3.2 strong innings, giving up just five hits and two runs, while striking out a pair, before Jordyn Moquin (Plantsville, Conn.) came on to pitch 2.1 innings, and held the Pioneers to three hits and one run. Shelby Allen (Oakland, Conn.) came on to get the Pride's final three outs, as she struck out a pair to seal the victory.

Smith got on the board first in the top of the second when Tori Brown (New Market, Md.) roped an RBI single to right field, scoring Caroline Kushner (Cheshire, Conn.), before Joseph's home run in the bottom half of the frame gave the Pride a 2-1 advantage.

The Pioneers added another run in the top of the third inning, but Springfield quickly broke the tie when Webb stung a two-run double to right center, before Cox hit a deep fly to left, scoring the senior to put the Pride up 5-2 after three.

After another Smith run in the top of the fifth that cut the Pioneers' deficit to a pair, Springfield quickly regained its three-run lead when Dani Gray (Milford, Conn.) singled to right, driving in Cox, before the Pride added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out Smith.

In the frame, Drobiak hit a long single off the top of the center field fence with no outs to score Mackenzie Navarro (Taunton, Mass.) from third, before Cox hit another sacrifice fly to left, scoring Nelson. The Pride's final run came when Joseph hit a pop fly to second, which was caught, but Webb was able to beat out the play at the plate to push Springfield's lead to six.

Allen came into the game in the top of the seventh and struck out a pair to seal the win.
