Men's Soccer Wins Fifth-Straight; Defeats Anna Maria, 7-0

Box Score

Paxton, Mass. - September 14, 2016 - Six second-half goals helped the Springfield College men's soccer program past Anna Maria College, as the Pride defeated the Amcats, 7-0, on Wednesday night.

With the win, Springfield College, which was ranked No. 9 in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division III Men's Soccer Regional Rankings, improves to 5-0 on the year, while with the loss, Anna Maria is now 1-3 overall.

Wednesday night's victory marked the second time in Division III program history that the men's soccer program has won its first five games of the season, and first program to start 5-0 in consecutive years. Additionally, the 7-0 result marks the first time the men's soccer program has posted seven goals since the 2006 season, when Springfield College defeated MCLA 7-0.

The Pride held a dominant 37-3 advantage in shots over 90 minutes of play, while Springfield College also had six corner kicks to Anna Maria's three. In net, senior goalkeeper Zach Richard (Millbury, Mass.) and sophomore goalkeeper Stewart Frank (Pittsford, N.Y.) split halves, as Richard posted three saves in the win. For the Amcats, Mark Robinshaw (Ashford, Conn.) took the loss but made 13 saves, while Dalton Gill (Florida, N.Y.) came on in relief and made two stops.

It took Springfield 16:59 to break the tie, but the Pride took a 1-0 advantage over Anna Maria when Christian Steidle (Owego, N.Y.) sent a direct free-kick into the box, that Douglas Enga (Syosset, N.Y.) headed in for his first of the year, and the only tally of the first half.

Just 4:57 into the second fram, senior Taylor Gilfoy (Holliston, Mass.) netted his third of the year on an assist from Christian Schneider (Douglas, Mass.), before Nick Fontana (Marshfield, Mass.) found the back of the net just 2:43 later on a nice set up from Danny Murphy (Old Saybrook, Conn.) to make it 3-0 early in the second.

Sophomore Keon Haji (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Luke Alvaro (Chicopee, Mass.) connected for the fourth goal of the game, as Alvaro buried a point-blank opportunity, before Tim Wood (Derry, N.H.) added his first of the game on an assist from Dexter Tenn (South Windsor, Conn.).

With 16:09 to play in the contest, freshman Connor Prindle (Shelton, Conn.) set up classmate Ty Champagne (Watertown, Conn.) for his first-career goal in maroon and white, before freshman Charlie Argyle (Marshfield, Mass.) followed suit and netted his first-career goal with 4:13 to play to seal the win.

Up next, Springfield College will open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 17 when it will take on Wheaton at 12 p.m. on Brock-Affleck Field.
