Women's Lacrosse Falls to Nationally-Ranked Amherst, 9-4

Amherst, Mass. - March 21, 2017 - Behind a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.), the Springfield College women's lacrosse team fell to nationally-ranked Amherst College, 9-4, on Tuesday evening at Lehrman Stadium.

With the loss, Springfield College is now 3-3 on the year, while Amherst, which was ranked No. 19 in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) National Rankings, improves to 3-2 overall.

In net, senior goalkeeper Gabby Anderson (Mahopac, N.Y.) made five stops in the setback, while her counterpart, Kyra Gardner (Darien, Conn.) made a pair of saves over 60 minutes of play.

Amherst College got on the board first when Kelly Karczewski (Darien, Conn.) found the back of the net just 1:41 into the contest, before the Purple and White extended its lead to a pair just 6:57 later when Karczewski hauled in a feed from Julia Crerend (New Canaan, Conn.) and buried her chance to make it 2-0. 

Junior midfielder Dakota Foster (Brunswick, Maine) pushed the hosts lead to three with 17:31 on the board, before Crerend converted her first goal of the game just 2:16 later to make it 4-0, Amherst. With 10:03 to play in the first half, Katherine Malone (Sudbury, Mass.) scored her first of the contest to push Amherst's lead to five, a lead they would take into halftime.

Springfield College struck first in the second half when Amanda Nusbaum (Conway, N.H.) found the back of the net just 2:41 into the stanza, before Shelby Corsano (Bourne, Mass.) finished a feed from Bianca Raniolo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) for her 14th goal of the season, making it 5-2 with 22:09 to play.

After a goal from Crerend to make it 6-2, Amherst, sophomore Katie Stallone (Seaford, N.Y.) tucked a shot past Gardner to cut the Pride's deficit to three with 18:21 left in the contest. Amherst would score back-to-back goals to push its lead back to five when Malone and Crerend both converted chances before taking a 9-3 lead when Kate Wyeth (Concord, Mass.) scored with 1:35 on the clock.

Stallone would find the back of the net once more before the contest ended, netting a feed from Allie Goddard (Acton, Mass.) with 1:06 remaining, but Amherst would hold on for the 9-4 win.

Next, Springfield College will hit the road when it travels to No. 12 SUNY Brockport on Saturday, March 25. First draw is set for 11 a.m.
