Worcester, Mass. - February 23, 2019 - The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team placed sixth as a team at the 2019 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championships on Sunday at WPI.
MIT claimed its 11th consecutive title and produced 1,477.5 point as U.S. Coast Guard Academy also surpassed 1,000 points with 1,179.5 to take second. Host WPI finished third (857), followed by Babson College (498), Wheaton College (476), Springfield College (475) and Clark University (219).
In the 1,650 freestyle, Nicholas Smith (Longmeadow, Mass.) turned in a time of 16:59.40 to finish in 12th, while Christopher Schreiner (Fairfield, Conn.) posted a time of 2:01.94 in the 200 back.
Sean Mitchell (Canton, Mass.) registered a 47.71 in the 100 free before Springfield had a pair of top-12 finishers in the 200 breast, with Michael Allo (Newington, Conn.) recording a 2:12.43 and Anthony Soares (Worcester, Mass.) touching in 2:14.69.
Erik Jensen (Hainesport, N.J.) just missed out on the school record in the 200 fly, as he time of 1:52.66 nearly bested the program's best time of 1:52.22 that was swam by Dan Moran in 2005.
To wrap up the championship, the 400 free relay team of Mitchell, Jensen, Smith, and Sean Harnish (Middlebury, Conn.) combined for a 3:10.39.
