Butler Breaks Pool Record as Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Down Hartwick and Union in Double Dual

Oneonta, NY – January 10, 2026 – The Springfield College men's swimming and diving team defeated both Hartwick College and Union College in a double dual on Saturday afternoon on the road.

Springfield topped Hartwick, 155-145, and Union, 182.5-111.5, pushing its record to 3-4 in duals this season.

Springfield began the meet with a first place finish in the 200-medley relay as Matt Quinney (Belchertown, Mass.)Dawson Milligan (Forestdale, Mass.)Dan Backlund (Duxbury, Mass.) and Spencer Studley (Meriden, Conn.) clocked a time of 1:40.22.

Quinney went on to record runner up finishes in both the 200-free in 1:48.95 and the 100-breast in 1:00.95, while Milligan won the 100-back in 55.73 and the 200-IM in 2:03.29 and took third in the 100-fly in 55.62. Backlund registered a first place finish in the 50-free in 22.09 and took second in the 100-free in 49.05, while Studley registered a seventh place finish in the 200-breast in 2:31.94.

Riley Hester (Barkhamsted, Conn.) registered runner-up finishes in the 1000-free in 10:12.19 and the 500-free in 4:58.35 and took fourth in the 200-fly in 2:07.60. Charles Deaton (Bluffton, S.C.) took second in the 200-back in 2:05.71, while Zavier Villanueva (Wilbraham, Mass.) took fourth in the 100-fly in 57.28 to round out individual swimming highlights today.

Quinney, Backlund, Villanueva and Hester wrapped up the meet with a first place finish in the 400-free relay with a time of 3:16.27.

It was a remarkable day in the diving well for Christian Butler (North Haven, Conn.) as he once again swept both boards with NCAA regional qualifying marks. Butler also broke the pool record on the 3-meter board – a mark that has stood since 1998 – with his score of 306.70 today. He also notched a 295.80 on the 1-meter board.

Tyler Khongkham (East Hampton, Mass.) took second on both boards and Andrew Testa (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished third on both boards. Springfield now holds the pool records on both boards with Butler's record today as Connor Pennington set the 1-meter record in 2019.

Springfield will return home for a dual with Middlebury College next Saturday at noon.
